A
lovely hotel that has outstanding views of the
surrounding Ramblas section of Barcelona, Le
Meridien is another fine member of the upscale
Le Meridien chain. The building was completed
in 1956 and is designed in the moderniste-style
that is so prevalent in the region. The
guestrooms are spacious and comfortable and
feature double paned glass to keep the street noise on
the street.
Ritz
Hotel
The
Ritz Hotel is one of the finest hotels in
Barcelona. Built in 1919, the Ritz combines
old world charm with all the modern
conveniences today's traveler demands. As one
of the city's few five-star hotels, you can
expect the very best in service and
luxury.
The
Hotel Derby has oiled hardwood panels, soft
lighting, and comfortably upholstered
armchairs to help convey a modern British
design. The smart guestrooms are simply
designed with an emphasis on comfort and many
have small balconies that overlook the hotel's
pretty courtyard. Another feature of the hotel
is its art collection including a painting by
Juan Miro.
The
Gothic Quarter is an historic area of
Barcelona that features many of the city's
most popular attractions. Some of the notable
sites include The Santa Maria del Mar, one of
the finest examples of Mediterranean Gothic
Architecture and the Catedral de la Seu, where
natives gather each Sunday to dance the
sardana.
Another
part of the city is the newer Eixample section
of town. Typified by Moderniste architecture,
the area has some of the city's upscale
boutiques and cafes. One of the most
misplaced, but popular attractions is
the Temple Expiatori de la Segrada Familia
which is strikingly different from the other,
beautiful buildings.
Not an activity for everyone,
visitors to Barcelona often go to the
Monumental to see the bullfights that are held
there on Sundays from March to October. The
ring is among Spain's most famous and has a
small museum dedicated to bullfighting.
Exhibits include dresses of famous toreros,
historical documents and other items from the
world of bullfighting.
